The "A" means assistant captain. The Captain or the assistant captain are the only players allowed to talk to the ref when questioning penalties called.

Basically when the Captain is sick/injured the Alternates take over the Captains duties. Also when the C is not on the ice or in the penalty box the Alternates can talk to the refs to get an explanation for a call/argue a call.
As stated earlier, theres typically 1 C and 2 A's,1 C and 3 A's, and on a less frequent occasion (I.E. Pittsburgh recently) no C and 3 A's

The A's on the top left or right w/e, mean they are an Assiting Captain or co-captain if you want to call them that. Two players only wear the letter of an assistant captain. And there is only one player who doesn't change his letter which is a C which stands for captain. Assitant captain may change often but captain stays.

A=Assistant Captain, usually 2 or 3 on a team
C=Captain, there is only on captain
The players that wear them are either the best players or leaders plus they do the talking to the referee.

If a player has an "A" on the left shoulder of his sweater it means he's an alternate or assistant captain. Tems are allowed up to three alternates; but only one captain.
