lol of course its for science!

gills function like filters- they help to take all the dissolved oxygen out of solution (generally water) so that the animal can use it. Note that they do NOT break water up into two hydrogens and then one usable oxygen!!! They can only take one already present oxygen molecule (O2) out of the water. And gills need to be wet in order to work- thats why fishes die out of water. :o)

Like the ones on fish? They allow the sih to breathe in oxygen in the water.

In addition to obtaining oxygen, it is used to get rid of waste (carbon dioxide and nitrogenous wastes). They are also important in osmoregulation (salt balance).
