Hmmm,

A warrior weilding a sword is a mighty force indeed! Likewise, a great writer can do an incredible amount of either good or bad with the written word!

As Uncle Albert once mentioned, everything is relative!

So, if we have one who is unfamiliar with a sword, the sword is pretty much ineffective. It might even do damage to its user! Likewise (again), one who cannot write well (or put his/her thoughts into words properly) is like arguing with a shadow.

So, (again), depending on the situation, the correct answer could be either.

However, if someone (anyone) runs at me with a sword, I am going to get the heck out of the way. Someone tossing words at me, I'm not so terrified.

Gads! Did Uncle Al know what he was talking about, or what?

It's a tough one, there have been some great swords, Excalibur, the one Mel Gibson threw into the air and shouted Freeeedom in Braveheart. However I think the word is stronger, take the influence of religious and political books and think of all the great songs that have been written.

The word backed up by the sword.

The sword.
For example if a man has a sword aimed at me and he is intent on killing me and I open my mouth and use some words - I shall surely die!!

Unless I have a bigger sword to back up the words that just came out of my mouth!

The word is stronger. The pen is mightier than the sword, the words it writes can make or break you.

The word, they can incite riots or even wars which are responsible for more deaths than any sword would be (unless you're a samurai or ninja, and then you'd have to be awfully busy to match the mortality rate of a war)

The instant age of information makes the word stronger.

Lenin said prior to the Russian revolution 1917 that the most powerful weapon that his bolshevic party had was their newspaper Pravda. They won of course so I would have to agree with him that the word is more powerful than the sword.

Neither - "The PEN is mightier than the SWORD".

In other words, the written word has more effect than the use of force.

The word. Without the words of greedy self-righteeous demagogues there would be no wars, thus no use for swords.
