it is not the headphones, it is the laptop (i've tried about 5 different ones that workperfectly)
i have the latest updates for my sound card
i have a hp dv9009nr laptop
everything worked perfectly until three days ago, i was listening to a video on my headphones and halfway through the video the sound started coming through the laptop's speakers
since the sound will only play through the speakers
i use headphones 2 to 3 times more than the built in speakers

i have tow headphones jacks and they have the hissing sound when you turn the volume all the way up,
all of my headphones work perfectly when i connect them to my ipod,
the laptop is a month and a half old
i do not want to send it in for service if they are going to delete all my files, i have spent a lot of time getting video files and don't want to lose that time if i don't have to,

Headphones are designed to 'cut off' the built in speakers when the jack is inserted in the plug. If this does not happen, then the jack is broken. Even if your headphones were bad, your internal speaker would cut off. If under warranty, get it fixed, if not under warranty, and you feel confident, it may just need resoldering.
