I think the long term effects of the media have affected the whole of the fabric of American relationships.
America used to be a moral conservative society in which human dignity was, to a great extent, honoured. It was a fabric held together by strong social and family values. Things have really changed in the past half century to the point I am sure our ancestors would be appalled. How, you ask, did we get here?
A slow patient campaign to lower the moral fiber of the nation was the cause.
Until the appearance of Mae West, there were a few "naughty ladies" in the public eye, but Mae was the first one to be blatantly sexually inviting to all men. Her sexy innuendos are still popular today! The forerunner of sleaze on stage and screen, she was followed soon after by Jayne Mansfield.
Jayne had a mission in life. Her image as the new 'Queen of Sex' was notorious not only around the nation but also around the world. The worlds press awarded Jayne the title of "World's No. 1 Sex Symbol." At a time when most of the nation was still somewhat conservative, she attempted to do all in her power to liberate men and women from the moralities that governed them. Her movies sought to exploit sexuality in new and risqué ways considered perverse in the 50's and 60's. She was one of the first to break the taboo of no nudity in her films, which became the forerunners for the 'swinging sex films' of the 1970's, such things being unheard of before the 1950’s.
On screen she was alluring, voluptuous, and caused men everywhere to drool. The primary focus of the Church of Satan, which she served as High Priestess, had a goal of the destruction of Christianity and its influence in society. As a Satanist, Mansfield's desire was, as Mae West's before her, to emancipate mankind from the Biblical concept that sex outside of marriage was sinful.
In the 1950's and 60's pornography was considered seedy and irreverent. Mansfield's pictures appeared in Playboy magazine on several occasions and helped increase it's exposure to mainstream America. Playboy single-handedly owes her for making it “acceptable" to read. Her issues were both the biggest sellers in Playboy history and sellouts as well. Playboy acknowledges her influence on liberating women from the wisdom of modest dressing.
Think of the repercussions of this woman’s actions that affect us today. There is more. Her movies were vehicles to promote this freedom type of lifestyle. Her popularity and exposure added to her vast ability to affect so many people. The power that she wielded as an actress and her influence on the acceptance of immorality was enormous.
Sadly, this moral decline of America in the 1960's was primarily facilitated by Hollywood's elite who through movie messages and active personal lives, set the trend for immorality among hundred of millions of people, thereby destroying families, marriages, and all things sacred. This is the time when the drug-addled youth of the time freely (of which I was one) embraced the concept of “free love” and made it part of the world we live in today. As a result, families have been destroyed, girls are having babies, children have little guidance, crime and drug use is up, all because our moral fabric is torn and shredded.
As well, our generation was also highly influenced by musical groups that promoted these concepts of free love and foreign religions that began to rock the Christian foundations of America.
How does this affect our world today, you ask? Now we get into the nitty gritty.
We have reached a stage in America where the media over runs our lives with the trivia of constantly shifting partners of today’s “entertainers”. Our young now consider living together first and marriage an option only. For most, “commitment” is a dirty word. As well, their addiction to these useless stories is a wonderful way for them to focus on everything but what really matters in the world. This affects every one of us. If you are honest, there has very likely been some movie star or member of the Hollywood elite whom you have admired, their making an impression on you in some way. Today shallow values and fashion are the things also highly affecting people. They set the agenda of social acceptability among the young.
Whew! That is quite a change from the beginning of the century, isn’t it? And it all goes back to Mae, Jane, Playboy, and the media. It began with politics and moved on to our sexual mores. Now the media also affects our communication, how we make or do not approach romance, and, in the longer, deeper way, it affects our finances as well. So many families and people grow up in poverty because their families are apart. Many men feel no obligation to support their children. Just the taxes that go to support that woman and her young affects us all because this money comes from the taxes we pay.
I have a feeling this is a deeper answer than you expected! But media has shaped our world profoundly by changing the mindset of millions of people.
