Hi..

I was just thinking about stuff i need for when my baby is born and i'm getting quite stuck on how many clothes to buy. I no babys go through clothes really quickly, grow out of them and they need washing quite often, but how much newborn stuff (from your own experience ) would you suggest i should buy? How much of each thing would you suggest ?

Please help me out,

Thank you :)

Well I have 2 kids. One was born in March when it was still kinda cold out and then my son was born in July when it's really hot. So it all depends on the time of year you are due.

With my daughter (Born in March) I bought her a little bit of everything aside from what I got at the baby shower.

Then with my son (Born in July 2006) I had lots of summer clothes given to me at the baby shower. So I really didn't have to buy anything until winter hit.
The main thing you use the most of is onesies, sleepers, and 1 piece outfits.

I would just keep track of what you have and keep reciepts so if anything doesn't get used you can maybe take it back and exchange it for something that you need.

Babies do grow out of clothes rather quickly. However, don't neglect in buying newborn sizes either. I had a very normal pregnancy and delivered 3 days before my due date. My son was born at 5 lbs and 11oz!! He was so tiny! He couldnt even fit into some of the newborn clothing until he was 3 months old. My huband was certain that we would not need to buy any clothing after my baby shower but he was wrong. He spits up on things so we change him a few times a day...and I can't help getting him something when I am at the store!

Try not to buy too much before the baby is born unless it is at least 3-6 months sizes, I had tons of newborn sized stuff bought and my daughter wound up weighing almost 12 pounds, so half of the stuff didn't fit her. But get some nice soft sleepers about 10 pairs, that way you don't have to do laundry 10 times a day, a couple of nice outfits for if you go visiting and you want the baby to look extra cute, and a few diaper shirts, and if you are going to be taking the baby outside a bunting bag. Also, if you buy things a bit bigger you can always roll up the sleeves, at least that way the stuff will last a bit longer. Trust me though, don't waste a bunch of money on outfits, because your baby won't even end up wearing them and by the time he or she does the clothes will be too small. At least that is what I found,

I'm a mom to five, buy a special outfit for baby to come home in, about 6 outfits that you can not live without, mostly while you are at home all you will need is onsie shirts and sleepers about 10-12 of each, and same number in size 3-6months, some baby's are born bigger then others for example when my children were born they wore preemie clothes for a while but my sisters children went into 3-6 months after 1 month, it's fun to shop before the baby but remember one tip it's a lot more fun after they are here, also i don't know how far along you are but you will receive a lot of what you need as gifts from friends and relatives, so give it a while before you have too much a mistake i have made more then once, if you have a pregnancy book they usually have a nice list in it and they are pretty accurate

You dont say when your baby is due so if its this spring:

6 vests and 6 sleepsuits as a minimum for newborn size
a few cardigans, hats, outdoor snowsuit

then when you look at 0-3 and 3-6 month get the same again plus some outfits.

You might get presents of stuff in which case keep the tags on if you think baby might not wear it that way you might be able to take back to the shop and exchange it for older baby stuff.

Dont forget some blankets and muslim cloths as well, you will need a dozen of each. Keep a blanket or 2 in the buggy, carseat, cot, livingroom etc......then a few will be in the wash.

Try and get away with the mimimum amount of stuff esp when they are tiny and keep on top of your laundry.

Do you and your baby stay home? If so then you will probably need less. That's what I found. If your gonna be going to daycare or babysitters then you'll need more. You;ll need things like onsies, t-shirts, comfy type outfits. I'd say at the most start out with about 8 to 10 outfits. Depending on how much you do laundry and go from there. You'll need things like socks and bibs too. I usualyy look at wal-mart and they have some great things or we have a family dollar store here and we buy some things from there. You can get a whole outfit for like 6 dollars. You'll appreciate that when you really see how fast they grow out of them. I gave away newborn outfits with tags still on them because my son never wore them. He was born in august and soon after it was getting colder. Keep in mind also what time of year your baby is due. Congrats and good luck!

Hi - I bought far too much and my son didn't wear half of it.

Don't forget people will buy you loads of clothes for the baby once it is born. We asked different people to get us different age groups of clothing so we didn't end up with a mountain of clothing for newborns. Also ask then to remember that when your little one is 3-6 months it might be June so they shouldn't buy big thick jumpers etc.. It worked well for us and saved us some money!

The advice I would give you is to buy several sleepsuits in newborn, probably about 7 as you can keep washing them with long and short sleeve bodies to put underneath depending on what the temperature is. Your little one will happily stay in these all day and will be comfortable and able to move/sleep/feed/have their nappy changed easily. Then buy yourself 4 or 5 nice showing them off outfits for when you are having people round or are going out somewhere.

My son grew out of newborn stuff in about 4 weeks and then went into 0-3 so I wouldn't go too mad.

From my experience and when I have the next one they will be in sleepsuits most of the time when we are in the house together and then I will get a few nice outfits for other occasions.

Get lots of muslin squares so you can put them on your shoulder when you wind them and if they are a little sick rather than washing your clothes you just have a small muslin to wash.

Get one thick and one thinner coat (for when you are only popping out ion the car and the baby wont be in the cold too much as you dont want them to over heat, 2 x fleecy blankets then you can use them in your pram, car seat and in the house, a hat, some scratch mits, a cardi and you are pretty much set to go.

So short list for you:
10 Sleepsuits
10 Long sleeved bodies
10 Short sleeved bodies
5ish nice outfits
1 thick coat
1 thin coat
1 hat
1 cardi
3 scratch mits
2 blankets
Lots of muslin squares!!!!

I think that you should only get what you need to start off as they get so many that you will find that they may not even wear them all. If you want your baby to ear anything other than babygrows then buy a few romper suits (better for hot weather). They were my favourite thing.

10/12 baby grows(one for every day and some spare)
10/12 vests
at least 2 pairs of booties ( they always seem to get lost)
A few pairs of scratch mittens
A hat (depending on time of year.) You can buy sun hats with a protecting flap at the back to protect neck. (i found this usefull when using the front carrier)

I brought a couple of packs of terry towlin napies(squares). These are VERY usefull as sick cloths!!!!!

One last thing, my daighter has a muslin square as a comforter which she has in bed and everywhere she goes instead of a dummy.
Congrats and good luck. This is all you really need. although ive probably missed something.

It depends really on how big ur baby is expected to be. I wouldnt buy anything in new born but in 0-3 months because they fit up to about 14 pounds so there will be growing room in the cute little baby gros, It doesnt matter if the clothes are a bit big at first because they do seem to shrink a bit when u wash them and they soon grow into them. If u are expecting to have a big baby then get 3-6 months. I started off with about 12 baby gros and vests and loads and loads of bibs. But my baby was sick a lot.

Neither of my children have spit up a lot or had the bad blow out diapers so one outfit and one sleeper per day is all I need. A lot of it is how often you are willing to laundry. We have a total of about 5 sleepers and 5 outfits. I'd suggest about 3 times as many burp clothes as clothes that you have, those you'll really fly through especially if your baby spits up a lot.

My son was 8lbs 14oz at birth. He never wore newborn size and grew out of the 0-3 month size in 1 month.

My daughter was 7lbs 13oz at birth. Again, no newborn size, and she's 2 1/2 months old now and I'm just getting rid of her 0-3 month size.

The hospital will send you home with the portion of the newborn size diapers that you haven't used while in the hospital. I would suggest 1 more package of newborns, then into size 1 diapers. We're just moving into size 2 diapers.
