They've been appearing more so in the second story of my house. I'm wondering if maybe they can sense some sort of environmental change that would cause them to move.

make sure thers no tuna sandwitch under the couch... Well some things for instance carpet cleaners containing orange smells or even amino acids located in the oil residue on your finger prints may lead ants. Say your phones or remote control even your keyboard. Thats why if u have an ant problom best use house whipe cleaners to whipe things u touch often

Ants can be attracted by many things. They also need water to survive, so they may come in to find water, and they are attracted to fabric softener--I had ants in my bed when I was in college because of this!!! Try to call an exterminator, asap. If you leave the ants as they are, they can be sure to rid you of the problem by finding their entrance.

Weather changes do affect where ants travel. Even cold or heat can drive them indoors.

Drives my wife nuts, too!

ants usually come looking for water rather than food.

maybe cuz there habitat is being overun, sometiems floods will cause ants to move up. has it rained lately?
