My friend advised me to apply some toothpaste on the scratches, but that didn't work out for any better.

Yes, scratches in eyeglass lenses, scratches in plastic of almost any kind can be removed safely and to a new like condition by polishing out the scratch. Since I assume you have polycarbonate lense its hard all the way thru.

Get a small can of Jewelers rouge and apply to a wetted cloth and begin polishing out the scratch. You will need two grades of jewelers rouge to really do a good job. One is more abrasive and the last polish is so smooth it is mirror like.

You can order the jewelers rouge on line costing about $2 each tube and it can be stored in cabinet the unused portion for future usage of polishing out almost any kind of scratch even off metal.

I have worn glasses for 30 years, with plastic lenses, once scratched always scratched. I have tried everything recommended and I just spent $285 today to get new glasses ($30 frames not designer, just the cost of checking eyes, bifocals, polycarbonate lenses, tinting(my only luxury))

Try a plastic polish. You can also try a CD/DVD Scratch fix kit, my sister used that and as long as the scratches are really fine it seemed to work well.
