Go to the office, generally, which is Bldg. 4 at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.
Many are assigned to specific technical areas or projects when not assigned to a specific mission, or they may be assigned to Russia for space station support. If there is a mission involving their area of expertise, then they may well get assigned to it.
Since many have to get in a certain number of flight hours in their T-38's, they may fly them to meetings in Los Angeles or other places where lots of NASA work is done, and to the Kennedy Space Center, of course.
