I’ve just turned 40 and I’ve never actually told anyone that I’m gay. My family know I’ve been living with another man for 15 years, so obviously they know I’m gay (none of them have ever asked). They all get on great with my “friend” and I get on great with his family.
I don’t think any of my old friends realised I was gay, so I never once had a homophobic comment said to my face. When my partner and I moved into our first place we had a lot of problems. Word got about that it was “two guys living together” and we suffered verbal abuse and vandalism to our property and cars. We moved from that house a few years ago and we’ve never had any problems since.
A lot of old school mates used to e-mail me. Then one of them found out I was living with another guy. He told the others and everyone stopped writing at exactly the same time. I’m pleased your life seems to be hassle free, but I would warn you of one thing. If you decide to live with a partner, just be very careful where you live. If you stay in the wrong area your life could turn into a living nightmare (trust me, I’ve been there). Best of luck for the future.

I've often said that few people are prejudiced against any group if they actually know someone like that. Maybe finding out that someone they already like was gay changed their opinion of gays. Also, of course, people are more tempted to make smart aleck remarks about certain people if they think there's no one like that around to hear them. They don't want to offend you, so they keep their comments to themselves. Or all of the above.

Absolutely.
Since coming out, and letting people know I will not tolerate such garbage and hate speech, I hear very little of it.
Of course, I do surround myself with people who support all people, and not ignorant bigots. That certainly helps.
