First, remember that no country or government is perfect. Because all humans make mistakes, there is no country out there without problems.

Second, I would attribute the varied problems
in the U.S. to the FREEDOM that is woven into
our society. Some people would argue that we
don't have as much freedom because of all the
problems that freedom brings.

For example, look at all the problems that
freedom brings (the cost of freedom):

1. Growing gap between the rich and the poor.
2. Millions of people without health insurance
(insurance not forced by government like in other countries in the European Union).
3. Industry is less accountable for environmental degradation (unlike in the EU).
4. Freedom to bear arms (lots of shootings).
5. Freedom of speech (lots of bad-mouthing).
6. Melting Pot - lots of racial conflict.
7. Etc.

Even where other countries don't have the problems that we do, they're still paying a
price for the type of system they have in
place. You look at Germany, for example.
Germany has a 'wonderful' safety net in place,
but they're also struggling with a large
unemployment rate (hovering around 11%) because
companies can't afford to 'baby' their employees and be competitive in this globalized
world we're living in now.

Point is, there is a trade-off for everything
in life. Problems will exist as long as
humans are on earth.

Good luck!

Current-day problems, or historical problems?

Since the current problems are very much in debate, I'll talk about some of the historical problems:

One of the biggest problems was slavery and the dependence on slave labor. Also, you could talk about the divide between the North and South and how it still exists to this day... You could talk about the significance of a two party system and how it can cause problems in a Republic.

You could talk about the increasing divide between the rich and the poor (which is very akin to what occured in the late 1800s)... the National Debt and the introduction of Deficit spending.

Pick your poison!
