So usually I buy size small shirts, some of them are big enough that I can keep them, but usually after a wash or two they shrink to too small. Usually they're on the smaller side to begin with. And then medium shirts are always way too wide for me, so if I buy those and wash them, they look really dorky (short and wide) on me. What can I do?

Start looking for the proper sizes other than 'medium' and 'small'.

Get your neck measured and your arms. You can buy shirts according to your neck size and your arms ya know.

buy a new brand, or shop around for brands that fit right. also you can wash your shirts and just hang them to dry so they dont shrink. different brands fit differently, and wash differently. look at the tag of your shirts to see how to correctly wash them.

maybe there is something wrong with the fabric. get shirts that STRETCH, and read the wash labels on them CAREFULLY.
