I answered a question like this a couple of times so I'll give you the same answer:
This is the effect of global warming which is caused by the burning of fossil fuels such as gas and coal and the clearing of trees. Clearing trees increases carbon dioxide levels and scientists believe carbon dioxide levels will double before 2050 to 750 parts per million.
And no, strictly it shouldn't happen but there are too many pollutants in this world. Some people however believe this is a natural process for us to get crazy weather which will eventually turn back to normal.
In fact, January 2006 was the hottest January on record in Toronto. I however believe this is nothing to freak about and some people *cough* tree-huggers *cough* are too concerned over this issue. One thing is certain however, don't expect too many white Christmases from now on.

Because of the effects of global warming, the snow that you see now is not as cold as the snow that you saw in the 70's. An environmental committee just came out with an unbiased report claiming that human beings are undoubtedly responsible for increasing the worlds temperature by 30 degrees or so since the Industrial Revolution.

That former responses isn't too far off, but it's incorrect. We've gained 2 degrees, maybe 1 or 2 more. Not 30. By 2050, the worlds temperature will rise by 2 more degrees if we continue as we are now.
But that's not relevant to your question. In reality, it's probably just perception, or the fact that everyone gets scared of snow nowadays. Everyone is far too safe now.

Nah... I'm afraid our perceptions of it tend to deteriorate as we get older. When we were kids- it was fun & a day off from school. Now it's a hassle & lost hours getting to work. Snow doesn't get "older" with time. We do.
