The world is "shrinking" in the fact that it's getting smaller
and smaller due to global communication at your fingertips
which is just a click of the mouse away. Because of the
availability and low cost of flights abroad, a trip to an
entirely different culture is only a few hours. People become
closer, faster, using these examples and creating the
illusion of a shrinking world. It's a metaphore.

this refers to increased communication and transportation abilities, which connect different parts of the nation, and the world (make it smaller).

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, railroads and the telephone made the nation more connected

Today, the internet connects the whole world, as well as airplanes which allow you to travel anywhere in the world
