The Swiss are capable of building trains the can go up and down mountain ranges of 30 degree gradients in 3 feet of snow which arrive on time for 3 months of the year and our entire network grinds to a halt from an overnight sprinkling of snow. Its embarassing.

My theory is that the people who run the UK Transport Industry (trains and roads) are all, in fact, recent migrants from Mauritus. As such, they are only used to balmy mild weather all year 'round. Therefore as soon as the weather gets a bit cold, or a bit hot, or a bit snowy, or a bit windy, or a bit anything other than balmy and mild, the entire transport infrastructure collapses because all these recent imports start running around going "Oh Sh*t! What's all this? Weather?? We never had that back in Mauritius!!!?" and don't know what to do.
Now - it isn't much of a theory; but it's the only reason I can come up with as to why, as soon as the weather does anything, the trains stop running and roads are closed.
I mean, we had about 1" of snow in London today and the Northern Line - which is 90% underground - closed down.
I mean, WTF?

It's embarassing because it's the same every year. I'm not in England at the mo but I heard news reports about the snow causing chaos. When I checked online I discovered that 'many places received 2-4 INCHES of snow'. That's hardly enough to get my feet wet for godssake. Consider that places like North America, Russia and northern Japan have FEET of snow at a time, yet are still able to function quite adequately thanks to something amazing called 'preparation'.
Pathetic!

Why? The country is infested with just enough immigrants from the southern latitudes who have never seen snow, and don't know what to do when it comes. This, and @rsehole drivers who think travelling above 25 mph is to fast on a clear, gritted trunk road.

u fool, the obvious answer is because we rely on transport such as lorryies to provide us with everything we need, and cars and buses to transport us around to our jobs....... when it snows this process is slowed down for obvious reasons, and becomes very slow, as it is slow when there is now snow anyway.
Our country is tiny comapred to the amount of ppl and vehicles, and when that slows down, we really do grind to halt . As for the person sayin 'oh the swiss an build things that are not affected by the snow' they do that becasue they live in constant snow
serious

It's just about being British lol
You'd think we would have made things so they work in all weather, I'm sure Canada has a rail network which doesn't halt when it snows.

Apparently a*se is a bad word on Answers...who knew!
Anyway - try coming to California. If you want to see useless drivers in ANY weather, you'll beg to go back to the UK!

Every time it snows there are hundreds of accidents , and people don`t want to be part of that statistic.I can relate though it is annoying being stuck in traffic.

Because people don't know how to freakin' drive when it's sunny and dry. Surely, you don't expect them to do any better when it's snowing and icy.
Nope, not me on your hiney, luv. I stay home when it snows. I have no patience for the idiots on the highways that are out rushing to get toilet paper and milk.
