The most popular classical composer is Mozart followed by Bach and Beethoven in that order. No one else is even close in terms of how often their works are performed by professional orchestras today or in terms of sales of their works today.
The most popular contemporary classical composer would be Aaron Copeland.

Well, I don't really know which is more popular...my favorite though is Beethoven. Download "Moonlight Sonata"...you'll be listening to it for hours.
