No dirt, just water. We bought a beta fish. Is there anything special I need to do or know before putting the fish in the bowl?

its probably not a bettas favorite home. a good home for a bettas is a gallon or more.

you should clean it weekly and use a water conditioner for fish in the water.

bettas prefer temperatures in the 70s and 80s so make sure he is in a warm spot out of drafts and not in direct sun -- that will heat the water and cook him.

feed the betta betta food -- if you get pellets most of my bettas eat 4 to 6 pellets a day. don't overfeed or it will make a mess. bettas eat mosquito larvae in their native envrionment and really don't want to try to survive on plant roots.

make sure the betta has ample water surface space. bettas breath air on the top of the water and don't process it from the water like other fish. you will see him go up to the surface every once in a while and get some air. he might blow a bubble when he does this too.

A large fishbowl should work. Usually Peace Lilies are used in this kind of set-up so I'm assuming that's what you have. Make sure it gets enough light because it needs light to make oxygen for the water for the fish. Keep the water clean and the fish should nip at the root hairs of the plant for food. If it doesn't look like it is ever doing this then add a pinch of fish food until it learns to nibble at the roots (which will not hurt the roots or the plant). Also, don't add fertilizer--it can hurt the fish and the fish is adding fertilizer of it's own anyway. We used to sell a ton of these but not so many anymore.

How big is the bowl? Even one beta fish should have at least a 5 gallon tank with 72 degree fahrenheit water. Put the fish in a small bag and leave the bag in the fish bowl for about an hour so the change in water temperature doesn't shock the fish.

the plant is most likely a peace lily... if it is, it will die .. peace lily's need to grow in soil.. as for the beta, you will need to change 1/2 of the water once per week.. when adding the new, clean water, treat it with a water conditioner meant for fish.. it can be purchased any place fish are sold (I buy mine at walmart)
