As a heads up, if you want to setup imap for aol you have to make sure you have all the server paths and same goes for hotmail (http) or yahoo (pop3).
Outlook works well with these programs which some business have adapted to because of its complexity. However, for home users, these services might come at an expense so for instance if you want to setup a pop3 mail account for yahoo through outlook, you will have to sign up for their premium account which i believe is 19/yr and the same goes for hotmail. So make sure you find out before hand. Good Luck.

Some email providers require you to pay extra to use their e-mail on something like thunder bird or outlook. Maybe thats the problem. If thats not, then it's because you might have gotten the pop3 or imap server wrong. If niether of these is right, try using outlook or outlook express. I personally like thunderbird, but outlook works too.

Sorry to disappoint you, but there isn't much out there that will check webmail sites for you. Some webmail accounts have a pop3 server which you can use (I think Yahoo mail can do this) which will allow you to use Thunderbird. I'm not sure than MSN does that though.

I can use outlook to download all my MSN/hotmail emails as it will allow HTTP but I am not sure if it would allow AOL as I dont know anything about AOL.

Use Microsoft Outlook. It will host HTTP.
