Because Americans ARE rude and ignorant. They're known all over the world for their ignorance and rude behaviour! That's why everyone hates Americans.
Thats why anywhere you travel in the world always wear your Canadian Flag (if you are a Canadian), you'll be treated ALOT better, except in the States of course. LOL
Here are some prime examples of how dumb Americans actually are! Have a good laugh at their expense...I literally had Americans walk up to me and actually ask me these questions:
1) At what elevation does a Moose BECOME an Elk?
2) Are the Banff Park animals with the tags on their ears tame?
3) Where do you keep all the wild animals at night?
4) How can I see all of Canada in one day?
5) How long do your Igloos last when summer begins? ( Yeah, cause we build our houses each Spring then tear them down for the Winter and live in Igloos! LOL)
6) Where can I buy a map of the STATE of Jasper? (for those that don't know...Jasper is a town in the PROVINCE...not State.. of Alberta, Canada)
7) After driving through the Town of Banff, that has MANY HUGE signs indicating where you are, I had an American drive aaall the way up to the BANFF Springs Hotel and then ask me...Where the hell is Banff?
8) How much do the Mountains weigh?
And my favorite...Can you take a picture of me and my kids with the "big Deer"? (The "big Deer", was an Elk Buck....in heat, needless to say I walked away from them...quickly before the idiot & his kids pissed off the horny 450 lb. Elk)

It seems by what you write you may be young. People in general not just Americans have their unrefined moments. Nervous around a stranger, can be one of those times.
Don't take them as the all American type Take it as the California type.
The first year in LA I found many of the locals to be very hard to understand and they were guarded as to know a stranger. How odd the Town is filled with people looking for a friend. But afraind they would get hurt so they hurt.
It is not the American thing it is the I am afraid of getting hurt thing.

I wouldn't say that it relates to them being mean per se. But, most Americans are not very well traveled. Thus, as most have never left the country, it makes sense that they would be culture shocked by a foreigner's accent, beliefs, wording, etc. I certainly don't know the context of everything you experienced, but it sounds to me like they were venting the awkwardness of dealing with somebody new and outside their comfort zone (albeit in a negative manner).
I certainly wouldn't generalize though. Not all Americans are mean!

It sounds as though something happened on your part or either theirs that caused you all to get off on the wrong foot. Maybe all of you just have alot of growing up to do? Nevertheless you don't judge all American's by a few. Remember...Just because there are a few bad apples in the bag doesn't mean the other's are no good.

I am from Sweden, lived in California for over 20 years and now live in Michigan (for a whole year now). Trust me when I say it has nothing to do with anything wrong with you. They are just trashy people who were never taught proper manners.
I'm very sorry that happened to you. Don't hold it against Americans or Californians. Most of them are actually very nice!

Maybe it was just them being immature. Where are you from? They might have just been being immature and just stupid, probably lauging at your accent. Not all Americans are like that. Just recently, my school had a korean student transfer to us. She couldn't speak English that well and there was like one or two kids making fun of her when she tried to talk. Me and like ten of my friends stood up for her. A few days later we were good friends. A few days after that and we were going out.
Next time you come to the U.S. you should go to Maine, specifically the New Castle/Damriscotta area.

Don't judge an entire culture by a few idiots that laughed at you. You probably have a funny accent and they just couldn't help themselves. Californians are kinda like that. Try visiting somewhere else.

Because there are quite a few Americans that are unquestionably rude and get their rocks off at belittling anyone that isn't like them. These Americans are notoriously ignorant and small-minded and when in a group, are meaner than a pack of rabid dogs. I love my country but, I really don't like some of the people it produces because those people give the good people a bad rap.

Sorry you had a bad experience, but not all of us are mean, and they were probably laughing at the accent, which is still wrong. You should visit again one day

Just because your family and their friends are @$$holes, that doesn't mean all Americans are. Or even all Californians. I'm from CA and I don't consider myself to be a mean person. I know plenty of very nice Americans. Don't judge all of us by the actions of a few!
