This is a nice subject for me as I'm training to become a driving instructor...!
I personally had 6 lessons, of which 3 were in my own car. passed both tests first time with no issues. i took my tests in 2000 (no Hazard perception test)
The average for a pupil to learn to drive is approx 45-60 hours of tuition, of course this will change for individual people, depends how fast you learn and whether its a natural skill or it has to be worked on.
I personally recommend 2 hour lessons, you get alot more from them, and the travelling time doesn't take up half the lesson!!
The government are thinking of making the polish law stand here "students will have to have 100 hours minimum of paid tuition before they can sit there practical test"
Of course there are advantages and disadvantages to this....
But i wont go on anymore!!
Hope I've helped.

This is very tricky. They will tell you they are good, but when you start the lessons you will discover the bad things. I have started with Bottom Line (Canberra) in October and I have done 11 lessons until the middle of December. The driving instructor was often late, once we had to change the car, twice he cancelled the lessons, and once we went from Bruce to Mitchell to find a place to do the reverse parallel parking (20 min to Mitchell, 20 min back to Bruce, the actual hour was only 20 minutes). Quite often, he yelled at me to change in the 5th gear to "save his fuel", as I had the lesson for free. It was an awful experience, so be careful when choosing the driver instructor. By the way, he was recommended by someone, so to choose a recommended one is not always the best way. I know people who had their licence in less than 15 lessons, but my driving instructor would say is not enough, especially if you come from other country. I'm really sick of these money-centric driving instructors who rip you off. Take care and good luck!

This makes me sound really old but my lessons had to be 2 hours long (lived out in the country) and they were £12 for that 2 hour lesson. Unfortunately for my Dad I learnt to drive for a year with nearly one 2 hour lesson a week but at least I passed first time!!
I still maintain its one of the best qualifications you can achieve.
Good luck and I hope you pass first time - don't give up mate!

1 formal lesson and one practice test. Passed first time. 17 on 01/02/1984 and passed test 25/03/1984. But much fewer cars, lower standards, no theory test (just look at some pictures of roadsigns). However, 2 subsequent convictions for dangerous driving, 2 speeding tickets and owning some really awful cars over the years make me think that it is probably better to get it right than get it quickly.

I had 20 lessons and failed my first test - had only one lesson before my second test so not surprisingly i failed the second test!
Went thru a bit of a wild year and drove illegally for 18 mths, not recommended as it kills your insurance if caught. As i WAS caught i decided to go for my third test and only had 10 lessons before passing third time lucky :)
It all depends on how quickly you learn and definately depends on how your confidence is on the road! Good Luck with it tho :)

I took 40hours, at the beginning they were 1 hour lessons but very quickly switched to 2 hour lessons because you learn more faster and spend more time in the car and so you get further and more practice in
Oh and I passed first time - Oh and I haven't crashed my car yet either, not even a scratch :D

It really depends on how fast you learn and how good your instructor is! I had a test after 16 lessons, failed and passed after another 8...Best of luck!

To be honest your instructor should be able to tell you how many lessons it will take you, by the way you drive. It is different for each person, and depends how quick you catch on.
