Hi I am a big fan of shoujo manga and I recommend:

Hana-Kimi- It's probably the best shoujo manga ever.
The Wallflower/ Perfect Girl Evolution
Vampire Knight
Ouran High School Host Club- very funny.
Cat Street
The Bride of the Water God

Can't believe nobody mentioned NANA yet. It is extremely popular right now, and is on track to become a shoujou classic, just like Fruit Baskets became.

Another good one is Guung. This one is a bit harder to find, and is actually a Korean Manga. It is based on a TV-Show that was crazy popular a while back, so you know the story is top notch.

Yaoi is not a branch off of shojo. It's like saying yuri is a branch off of shonen. Yaoi/yuri are a genre all by themselves.

Let's see here, my sister is obsessed over Full Moon Wo Sageshite (anything by the author), Anything by Yu Watase ( Fushigi Yugi, Ayashi no Ceres, Zettai Karashi...ect.), Meru Puri(anything by her also), Kare Kano(His and Her Circumstances), Hana Kimi, and she went through a Peach Girl stage.
