It was made when 'bits' were a big thing. Now, nobody cares, but a lot of people wonder why its called Nintendo 64. Its just how many bits the system has. The Nes had eight bits. The Nintendo 64 has 64. :)

As others have said, due to its being A. Made by Nintendo, and B. Being the first ever 64 bit system.

Bitrate was the big thing in those days, from the Atari 2600 on, manufacturers were competing on who could get their bitrate highest... each console generation it doubled... 8, 16, 32, and then the N64 led the charge into the 64 bit generation.

Nowadays, bitrate is a nonfactor in the console wars.

It is a 64-bit system. To put that into comparison, I think a Playstation 2 is a 128-bit system and I have no idea what the new systems are. The sega genesis was a 16-bit system and a NES was an 8-bit system.
