Mbps stands for megabits per second. This number deals with your bandwidth, that is the maximum amount of data that your connection can transfer (in this case per second.)

Every Megabit per second allows .125 of megabytes to be transferred. 8 Mbps equals 1 megabyte per second.

Your connection, which is most likely a wireless connection to a wireless router, allows for a maximum of 6.75 megabytes per second (54/8= 6.75)

This, however, is your maximum connection speed to your router, not to the Internet. Go to a website like http://www.pcpitstop.com/ and it will check your download speed, which will accurately show your bandwidth speed in regards to your Internet connection.

If you believe you actually have a service that offers an 8 megabytes per second download ability you will need to connect to your router with an Ethernet cable to check its true potential. Since your wireless connection is limited to 54 mbps (or 6.75 megabytes per second) it would be impossible for you to download anything faster than that. Wired Ethernet connections range these days from 100 Mbps and up, which will provide you at the least 12.5 megabytes per second bandwidth.

Just because your computer can perform that high, doesn't mean it will. That will depend on your Internet connection and that is what http://www.pcpitstop.com/ can check.

Like people are saying 54Mbps must be the local speed of your home network. Your internet speed won't be over 8Mbps on a typical BT service. I am on BT and it varies a lot with time of day. It is currently at circa 4Mbps. If you use the Firefox browser you can get an add-on that will tell you your current speed. If it seems very slow your actual speed may be poor.

To test the actual speed you are getting try the site below. Preferably with no other prograns running as this will show a lower speed on the test ! I would alos test via another speed test to get a jmore accurate reading .. Mine is a 10meg connection yet sometimes i only get aslow as 8 but has been known to go as high as 12 ..... :)

evan's explained pretty much all of it apart for one thing... if you are on a home braodband, you will never get a true 8MG internet speed as most service providers do have small print that says you will be sharing your connection with about 20 other ppls (or more). this is call the ratio. so if you ever want to get your true 8 Mg speed, try it at 2 am when everyone in your area is asleep. :)

Don't trust the double screen icon on your system icon tray (on the lower right hand corner). I have a ultra-lite connection at 128 kbps and on that icon it says 100mbps. You should go online to your service providers website and check out what speed your internet connection is at (by finding out what price you're paying for and then seeing the connection speed they're giving you). Good Luck!!!

That is 54 thousand (aka mega) bits per second. There are 8 bits in a byte, so that would be 54/8=6.75 mega bytes per second. Pretty close to your 8 meg. Be aware that there will always be some bandwidth eaten by overhead (little bits of information added to the beginning and ending of a packet) so you will never see 100% throughput for your actual data.

go to www.speedtester.bt.com and get the actual speed of your broadband. Be aware it will fluxuate according to time of day and number of subscribers. Anything over 3 meg is pretty good.
