I have a TV with a built in DVR. I can't record one show while watching another, unless I manually hit record on a show and then use the PIP. I'm still playing with the machine but don't completely understand. When I hit record on a show while I'm watching it, I can then hit the PIP button to see another channel and I think the other channel will keep recording. However, it only lets me see channels 1-13 in teh PIP box. Should I be able to see more channels? Is there any other trick to watching one show while recording another besides hooking up a VCR?

If your TV has TWO tuners, you should be able to record one and watch another one.
Without two tuners, it is impossible.
If you have two tuners, check to see if you need to do a channel scan on both Tuners.
If you have a Cablecard, the second tuner may not be able to see the scrambled channels.

I have a DVR and it will not allow me change the channel while recording. I was told otherwise when I first purchased the set, however, they were wrong. I'm sorry. Yours could be different though, but I highly doubt it.

you elect a DVD recorder, that's genuinely a VCR yet makes use of a recordable DVD and not a video tape. it won't have the "smarts" of a DVR nonetheless, meaning you may inform it what channel, date, start up-time and supply up-time to checklist. be certain the DVD recorder you elect has its own geared up-in digital tuner, or you will could purchase a digital tuner container and connect that to the DVD recorder. in case you are trying this, you will set the channel you elect to checklist on the tuner container then set the DVD recorder to checklist from the AV enter the place the tuner is connected, back specifying the date, start up time and supply up time. you will could manually exchange the channel in this digital tuner in case you elect distinctive exhibits recorded that seem on diverse channels. you will choose a video splitter for the RF-Coax cable (the cable protruding of your wall) so as that your television and DVD recorder (or its tuner container) have their own connection. this form you are able to watch regardless of channel you elect on the television whilst the DVD recorder archives via itself. The DVD recorder will additionally allow you to connect your camcorder to a minimum of one in each and every of its inputs, and allow you to repeat your tapes to DVD that way. for this reason you will tell the DVD recorder to checklist from its AV enter, no longer a television channel. working example, on mine DVD recorder it rather is "IN1" or "IN2". Hit play on the camcorder, then checklist on the DVD recorder.
