I’m not sure this is the one you want. In Marvel’s Squadron Supreme, back in the late 80’s or early 90’s, there was a character called Nuke (loosely based on DC’s Firestorm the Nuclear Man, as all the Squadroners were based on Justice League members.)

Nuke had radiation powers, and when his folks came down with cancer, he felt it was his fault. He asked their group scientist Tom Thumb to cure them, and Tom unwisely promised.

When Tom Thumb failed, and his parents died, Nuke swore to kill Tom for ‘lying’ to him. Doctor Spectrum caught up to Nuke and, unable to reason with him, they fought. Spec’ used his Power Prism to contain Nuke (and his nuclear blasts) in a bubble.

But the blasts burned up all the oxygen inside, and Nuke died as well. Doctor Spectrum never forgave himself for that. And later, Tom Thumb also learned that he was dying of cancer. It was all very sad.
