I have to disagree with lipsicote.

Between 8 and 9 million died in battle.
----Almost 4 million Russian British and French Soldiers were killed.
----Germany alone lost close to 2 million men.
----The U.S. Lost over 100,000 men.

More than 20 million soldiers on each side were wounded.

The flu epidemic, which was brought back to America from soldiers who'd been stationed, killed another 500,000 civilians and over 30,000,000 people world wide. The flu was spread by war, so I'd expect that to count for something.

Some historians say as many civilians died as soldiers, but we'll never be able to really tell.

So added up:

8.5 million soldiers killed
(lets say) 7.5 million civilians killed
30.2 million flu victim deaths.
The total deaths caused by war would be very roughly and jaggedly some 45 million people.

Bye! Good Luck!

Lily may be quite right, thye US fielded only 500,000 doughboys and that is a realistic ratio.
