It’s snowy in Stars Hollow and Lorelai and Babette are removing a planted tree from Lorelai’s place and taking it over to Babette’s. She’s making a jungle for an upcoming party. The phones keep ringing inside Lorelai’s place, but she’s ignoring them. Lorelai finally picks up the phone. It is a call from Rory. About Richard’s heart attack. She leaves right away.
Rory is sitting in the hospital waiting room, staring at the wall. her phone is ringing but she doesn’t notice. A fellow waiter points out the phone ringing. Lorelai is calling to find Rory. They appear to be in different waiting rooms. Find each other.
Richard is in the Cardiac Care Unit getting tests done. It’s confirmed - Richard had a heart attack. Rory is spouting off medical terms. Perhaps her way to deal. Lorelai stops the babbling and gives Rory a hug. Poor Rory, having to see that.
Lorelai is leaving a message for Chris. Another message. About where she is - the hospital - and what happened. She wants his support.
Rory got one of every pop and candy available because she couldn’t decide. Very Gilmore-ish conversation about nightmares and not wearing shoes.
A doctor comes out to say that Richard is doing ok. He’s awake and in no more pain. Is now going for an angiogram to see the extend of the blockage and whether or not they need to go for bypass surgery.
Emily arrives at the hospital. She’s wearing a jogging suit!! Emily insists that she see Richard immediately. Gets mad at the nurse for being too chipper. And talks in general about the ineptness of service people. She wasn’t told for 40 minutes about Richard because she was at the health club and they ban cell phones, but suck at giving messages. So, she’s talking a mile a minute, very Lorelai-esque, about random things.
Logan arrives at the hospital. Rory goes to give him a hug while Lorelai lends an ear to Emily’s ranting. Logan offers Emily some tea, and she accepts, complimenting Rory on Logan.
The doctor comes out and says they need to do open heart surgery, so they should all go visit Richard now. Emily drills the doctor for his credentials as they walk over.
Emily and Rory go in right away, but Lorelai has to take a deep breath first. Emily says how competent Richard’s doctor is, to make him feel better. He does look good. Richard apologizes for scaring Rory in class.
Richard drops the quote from WC Fields, saying he’d rather be there than in the hospital. Lorelai comments about cream cheese. Emily fusses that the pillow is not covered two ways. Tries to either busy herself or be light and easy.
Zach is serving at the diner. Filling in for Lane. He’s feeling very ‘on the inside’. Lovin’ it. Babette comes to the diner to tell Luke that Richard had a heart attack. She didn’t know if she should mention it, but thought Luke might want to know.
Lorelai is on her cell trying to reach Chris again. (btw, what’s with the cell phones in the hospital?!) She mentions her fears. How small Richard looks on that bed, and how it was freaking her out. Sookie calls to see if there is anything she can do. She is already sending over some baked goods. Michel says hello via Sookie. He’s being very sweet. Except he tries to butt in and ask some work-related questions.
Emily is talking on the hospital phone, which appears to be pissing off the nurse at the station. Emily is talking to an Anthony person, explaining why she is going to miss her dinner reservation. She lies, saying it is a last minute business trip. Richard is in the hospital, and all she can think about is food and not being on the ‘no’ list at the restaurant. Is Emily in denial?
Rory is talking about Paris’ ‘Operation Finish Line’ plans, about Paris being crazy, trying to push Rory to even do gymnastics. Logan is ultra sensitive, saying he doesn’t need to do anything but be with her. Business can wait.
Emily is prattling off her to do list as if nothing happened. Luke walks in and offers to do anything that needs to be done. Apologizes for being there, but arrived before he knew it. Lorelai says it’s ok for him to go, but Emily butts in and says he can help out by going to pick up Richard’s Jaguar from Yale, gas it up, and return it to the house. Emily tries to give Luke some money, but he refuses. Luke just wants to help any way he can.
Emily is panicking because she has to give a man some money to stock their house with fish - since Emily read they are good for hearts. Logan and Rory offer to go, as Rory also wants to get some of Richard’s stuff.
Logan mentioned that he flew there by helicopter so has no car. He was rushed. Aw, so sweet! Now, contrast that with the fact that Christopher is still not there…
Babette calls Lorelai to check in on her. Mentions how strong Richard is because he has good Chi. And is a sexy older man. *shudder* Babette is having trouble getting Paul Anka to leave the porch and go to the bathroom. Lorelai says he is afraid of the steps, so Babette lays down her coat. That did it. Cute scene.
Logan and Rory are in Richard’s office. Logan is directing the fish person to the house and Rory is picking up some of Richard’s books and personal details. Logan is getting a lot of business calls, but he’s ignoring them. Rory says she wants to know about business, to be distracted. Logan was off at a funding meeting when he decided to go meet Rory. He wants to buy another Internet company - something similar to Facebook. It’s a web 2.0 company, and the guy is willing to sell for only $5 million. Logan is willing to put up $3 million of his own money - his dad would not fund the buy - because he believes it’s a great business model.
Lorelai really enjoyed her previous semester business class. The one that was the prelude to the class with Richard. Now, next week is looking a little different…
Emily is complaining about the hospital food, then Lorelai and Emily then debate about what a cliche is and which cliches are true or not. Emily is asking her lawyer to fax Richard’s will to the hospital. That totally creeped out Lorelai. She wants to know why Emily wants to read the will right then and there. Is it smart, pragmatic? Or morbid?
Rory has all the books, music albums, games and items ready to take to the hospital. She is being incredibly thorough. She also brought clothes for Emily - things she would be more comfortable wearing. Choosing her an outfit was a tad comfortable. Rory thanks Logan profusely, but he says no thanks are needed. She takes that to heart. There is nothing more important than having someone there for you when you need them.
Emily hunts down Lorelai to verify her social security number for the will. Lorelai is getting mad at Emily for being so superfluous and morbid. Emily says these are things that need to be dealt with. Lorelai questions it. What things need to be dealt with - the emotions of a husband in the hospital or the to do lists of his potential death? Emily starts to cry and says she feels incredibly helpless and that there is nothing she can do - so that explains why she is filling up her time with anything she thinks might help.
Emily is downing candy like there’s no tomorrow. Milk Duds. She’s never had them before. The doctor comes out and says the surgery went really well, but he’ll be in the hospital for some time. Emily is offered to visit with Richard right away.
Emily sits with Richard and tells him all the things she’s done - the dinners cancelled, the best wishes forwarded, the fish she’s bought. Richard says it all sounds just fine. They both look incredibly relieved.
Lorelai is outside the hospital calling Chris again. Leaves a message that Richard is out of surgery. That she is trying to be a wife and update him, but that he should be there for her. They are married, after all. Richard having a heart attack is bigger than any fight. Sookie, Michel, Babette and Luke have all been there for her… but not Chris. She says that’s "not ok."
Rory puts on ‘Moody Blues’ by Bing Crosby on the record player. She and Lorelai are in for a private visit with Richard. Rory is being very cheery. So relieved.
He says he’d rather be there, in New Haven. Unsaid - with his family.
Lorelai says Richard looks good. He looks ‘tall’ - although he wouldn’t get that reference. Richard has a nap - Lorelai says how good Logan has been. How lucky Rory is.
Luke returns to the hospital. He has brought food for everyone. So thoughtful! Lorelai updates him that her dad is doing well. Chris finally arrives to the hospital and asks a nurse where to go.
Zoom back to Lorelai and Luke. Luke is saying all the food he’s brought, including lots of fish for the heart-wary folk. Lorelai is incredibly grateful, but has to shift gears when she notices Chris is there. Chris is furious that Luke was there - thinks Lorelai was lying to him, that she obviously didn’t expect him there. He’s sulking big time.
Emily says it will all be ok. That blood is thicker than water and that every cloud has a silver lining…
But compare Chris’ response of ‘I am not dropping this fight even though your dad is ill’ to Luke’s ‘I will be there for you, no matter what is between us.’ Comparing is exactly what Lorelai is now doing…
