So I've read how a lot of people have tipped concierges in Vegas and sometimes have gotten a free room upgrade. Curious how you do this. I mean i'd love a potential free upgrade, and i'm just really new at this and don't want to look like some idiot sliding $50 winking my eye at the man/woman..tips/hints/suggestions?

The Consierge does not work the checkin desk in Las Vegas, unless you are a high roller and in that case you don't need to request an upgrade, they give you one free.

Keep your money in your pocket and when you check in just ask for an upgrade or for a king room on a high floor with a view. If the hotel is not crowded (i.e., because of a convention or something) they will do their best to give you a good room. This has worked for me several times.

The best way to get upgrade on return trips is to stay at the same hotel as before and join the players' club and use your card. You don't have to gamble thousands of dollars to get upgrades.

I used to be a gate agent at the airport and had the power to upgrade people to first class if i felt like it. I can tell you I hated 'sob stories' (I'm sick, I'm on my way to a funeral, my legs are too long...) What I liked was someone in a good mood, who would joke around a little and then just ask for the upgrade in a friendly meek manner. Also, very important, don't ask when their manager is right there. So, when you check in at the front desk, wait until the person is alone and say in a real friendly way "hey I would love to stay in a suite, any chance of an upgrade?" and slide the $50 across the counter. I have a lot of friends who worked at the casinos in vegas and they made some extra money doing this. The only problem is they aren't supposed to, and there is so much surveillence in Vegas you might want to try it with someone who looks a little shady. If you have your choice of clerks at the front desk choose the young wreckless looking person.

Trust me, in Vegas no one is going to treat you like an idiot if you offer them $50. The worst that can happen is they say they're not allowed to.

Don't bribe, just be nice and ask. If you're cool and rooms are available, then your odds are pretty good. Keep in mind that at some hotels the concierges don't have that kind of access, but in others they do. No matter who gives you the upgrade, be sure to tip for the good service.
