In decompression sickness (when a diver surfaces too rapidly) the nitrogen, which is dissolved in the blood and body fluids, bubbles out and causes pain. Typically, the joints are particularly painful, but the pain can be eased a little by BENDing the joint to find a more comfortable position. The effective cure is to re-pressurise the body in a compression chamber before SLOWLY reducing the pressure as the body acclimatises.
