The more films that get them, the more people think 'oh, that must be a good film, I'll go watch it!'
and it makes the actors and actresses feel special too.

Its recognition for the actors and all the people that were involved in a film. The reward for their performance. I was reading about it, of all places, in a book on how to train animals...
In the book they explain that when an animal performs correctly, whether it is a Dolphin in SeaLife or a Horse doing a jump, it is rewarded and praised on the spot. It needs that input to do the right thing. The same for people. On the job, if your boss doesn't commend you for a job well done you won't do the next one as willingly.
Actors on stage, musicians, live performers of all kinds get their positive response there and then, when the audience laughs, cries and claps. A film award is the industries clapping. Belatedly.
Even though a lot of the awards seem to be decided by internal politics that sometimes barely have anything to do with the film that is awarded, Everybody that is involved with some part of creating the movie, from the cleaning lady and the tea lady up to the people with the money need to have something to show for their efforts that will last longer than the money.
An oscar nomination or an outright win can relaunch a movie, can give it more life and money and more importantly, will be used by the company that made the costumes, recorded the voices, lit the movie, provided the actors, scriptwriters and every other part of the complex family to prove they are the best choice for making the next one.

The BAFTAs are important since they represent British films and it gives British films much more credibility and status. Let's face it it a film has won an award for Best Picture, you are going to see it because it is highly regarded as such.

They validate the film as a success. It is also nice when all of your peers recognize you work as being with the best of the best throughout the years. They are films that will generally stand the test of time.
Some movies that have won best picture include:
Gone with the Wind
Casablanca
Ben-Hur
My Fair Lady
and Schindler's List

The Oscar awards have been initially meant to be a merchandising stunt to augment the popularity of the flicks. that is all business enterprise. that is merely somebody's opinion, and in many circumstances politically stimulated. Awards are frequently pointless.
