Offensive
AL: Joe Mauer
NL: Brian McCann
also worthy: Victor Martinez, Jorge Posada, Jason Veritek, Michael Barrett, Paul LoDuca
Defensive
AL: Ivan Rodriguez
NL: Brad Ausmus
also worthy: Mike Matheny, Benjie Molina, Yadier Molina, Jason Veritek
There is another aspect that makes a catcher great and that is pitch calling and the ability to mentor young pitchers and get the most out of the pitching game as a whole. Jason Kendall and Jason Veritek have outstanding reputations for being great mentors, thoroughly studying all opposing hitters and calling great games. Their contributions to the pitching game can not be undervalued.

Mauer, hands down. Soild with the glove, good young hitter too. He is the best right now.
Pudge is still good for his age, but declining.
Victor Martinez is a good hitter, but not a great catcher.
The NL has no true studs right now, but Russell Martin of the Dodgers and McCann of the Braves look like a keepers.

Joe Maurer is the best in the bigs.
NL, Brian McCann, Atlanta Braves, young talented, and the guy can hit. Ausmus is the best defender, but its hard to find good hitting catchers, and for that reason, I give it to McCann. The Braves also have 2 other good catchers Bryan Pena and jarod Saltalamachia who could be making a big impact soon.

The true mark of a great catcher is how he handles a pitching staff year after year. I generally look at consistency by the team when pitchers use a revolving door. Based on that my choices would be:
AL: Ivan Rodriguez
NL: Paul LoDuca

AL - Joe Mauer (Twins) - without a doubt. Pudge has no power since he "lost" all that weight in just one off-season. Hmmmm. How did that happen?
NL - Brian McCann (Atlanta) - great numbers at the plate and only 23 years old. He will only get better.

Pudge and Liebe and Pierzynski are all wonderful and I love all three, but for pure power and good game management you can't beat Joe and Yadi.
