As you go higher in the atmosphere,does the space between air particles increase or decrease?

As you go higher, the space between air particles decrease. This is what they mean when they say there is less air at high altitudes, and why most people have to carry oxygen to climb high mountains like Mt. Everest.

The reason for it is the same as the reason for all kinds of fluid pressure. (Air is a fluid, just like water.) All the molecules at the top push down on the ones lower down, packing them together more tightly. Thus, just as the pain in your ears increases as you get closer to the bottom of a pool, the amount of air you have to breath increases the closer you get to the surface of the earth, or the 'bottom' of the atmosphere.
