Practice. That's how you get to Carnegie Hall, too, by the way.

When I was 9, I started dancing. Because I started so young, I didn't have as much flexibility as the other dancers. When I got to be 12, I tried out for their dance team. They said that I was an amazing dancer, but I wasn't very flexible. And they were 100% true. When all of my friends went down in splits, they would be 1, 2inches away from the floor. But then there was me; almost one foot above the ground. I was so embarassed. But I was so dedicated, I practiced 3 times a day on each leg [including center] holding for 30 seconds for the first couple days, then bring it up to 1 minute, and soon I was holding all of my splits for 3 minutes on each leg and I had them in one month. So basically I went from absolutely no flexibilty to amazing flexibility in one month. But you can't skip a day to practice, or you'll be off track. You have to be dedicated to get your splits.

If you want to do the splits so that each leg is at your side (rather than front and back) then its best if you use a wall. Place your feet outstretched on a wall and then push yourself closer to the wall (just enough so you feel stretching but itsnot painful). Sit there for a few minutes then slowly push yourself closer to the wall- making your legs spread out further. One of my friends used this technique and was able to do the side splits within 3 weeks.

well you cant really learn to do the splits but you can make sure you stretch and then try staying in the splits (as far as you can go) for about a minute, or if you can hold it longer go for it! do some leg stretched like on a high counter, put your leg up their and do some pleays and relevays.

You have to warm up so the muscles can be safely stretched - and warm up by breaking a sweat. Try out hot yoga - I know a lot of dancers that swear by it....good luck!

make sure you're warmed up (not by taking a bath... by actually moving and breaking a light sweat!) before you start, so that you don't pull a muscle; that'll just slow down the process a million times more. then, just slowly try to go down as far as you can, and say "just one more inch for today, even half an inch, you can do it!" i know it sounds stupid, but it works. keep trying. good luck!
