distribute the -2
-2y -12 = y + 3 + 2y
now combine terms
-2y - 12 = 3y + 3
get the variables on one side and the real numbers on the other

We want "y" to be on "only one side"

first multipy the left side then simplify the right ... -2y -12 = 3y + 3
now simplify again by adding 12 to both sides... -2y = 3y + 15
and again by subtractin 3y from each side... -5y = 15
now divide by -5 y = -3

check your answer by inputting -3 -6 = -6
