The analogy is a dog chasing a squirrel or some other animal up a tree. The dog runs to the wrong tree and barks to catch his prey. The animal is in another tree, hence, the dog is denied what he wants. Compare it to your own situation and it may make more since.

It means you think you chased a "critter" up a tree and have it trapped, as in hound dog. So you have the wrong tree means he's not up there and you need to look elsewhere. Tell me you knew that!! Peace.
