I worked with journalists years ago and could have been one, but opted to go into another field. From talking with them I learned that you have to be very good in the language being used, an excellent speller, being able to tell the story in all details, when interviewing don't be afraid to ask 'hard' questions when you know the answer already, do not use assumptions and most of all be at the breaking story first and get it to the news room asap.

Hello,
Most local newspapers give the community an area to respond to editor comments and so forth...Q & A with your views being heard. It's a start.Rolling Stone,Playboy, and even Home and Garden magazines give outlets for questions, short stories, and guest editorials if the merit is there. Good luck!

Start writing lots of letters to the editor and Opinion Editorials to all your favorite newspapers. Published is published. Then broaden your scope and start looking for pay.

Many reputed employers post their job vacancies on major job boards like Careerbuilder,Monster,Hotjobs and Craigslist. Your friend could apply online and post her resume on these job websites.Instead of searching each site individually, she could also search for jobs posted on major job websites, newspapers,
etc. by using aggregators like Simply Hired and Indeed. More details at http://www.pcworkathome.net/jobwebsites.html
