They are both beautiful beaches but Hawksnewss will give you a better view and a more intimate feel b/c of the hilly contours of the islands. I want to stress to you that none of those beaches are going to be 'private' locations. Be prepared for there to be others around. Especially if its memorial day weekend, fourth of july etc.

Definitely St. John.
Being two thirds National Park gives it the edge for pictures. I have also witnessed awedding at Trunk Bay (next to Hawksnest). The wedding party arrived around 4 in the afternoon, and most beachgoers had already left. It was gorgeous! The wedding party was barefoot, and the band was just one guy tinkling away on a steel pan drum...
When it comes to just hangin' out at a beach with ammenities, I would go with Magen's (I just came from there). This place has a good snack bar, a gift shop, and fantastic frozen drinks... I recomend the "Bushwhacker".

I have been to magens bay, and although it was a beautiful beach, it wasnt picture perfect or really wedding ish. The water is not clear at all, and the beach is not always the cleanest, with leaves and stuff lying everywhere, just not very wedding like in my mind.

St. John was gorgeous, the entire island that is, and I would chose that spot. I can't remember if I went to Hawksnest or not, but I went to two different beaches and they were both picture perfect and had very few people on them (went in May). St. Thomas seemed nice, but I don't think it compared to St. John.
If we were eloping, which I sometime wish we were, I would definitely elope there. :-)
