I don't know whether it is a name or a word, I just know it from Tuomas Holopainen in Nightwish, but I can't find a definition for it anywhere. I'd really like to know what it means. Thanks.

Now that was a tough one, because that name (yes, it is a name, not a word) isn't derived from Finnish language. So it really doesn't "mean" anything, but if you are interested in etymology, the origins of the name can be tracked: "Holopainen", just like some other last names like "Holoppa" and "Holappa" (those two names are mostly found from Carelian territory, lost to Soviet Union during second world war... Holopainen is coming from the territory of Savo, which is still part of Finland) originate from a Russian word "holop", which literally translated means "slave". The use of Russian words (and names of some Saints) in Finnish names is due to the influence of Greek Orthodox church in eastern parts of Finland a couple of hundred years ago. I hope this appeases your curiosity :)
