9ct
It refers to parts of pure gold, per 1000 parts, in an alloy (mixture).
as it is a thousand parts, (pure gold is 999.99 as stamped on ingots) you can easily imagine a decimal point, to get parts per 100.....ie, a percentage.
so 375 would be? 37.5% !
and for 18 carat, which is 750, it would be? 75% gold!
silver, and platinum, is the same system... measured in parts per thousand.
22ct is 916.
The old carat method, used parts per 24. (where 24 carat was pure gold). so 9ct is nine, twenty fourths, pure gold.
Hope its not too confusing!
Modern hallmarks= parts per 1000
carats= parts per 24 (twentyfourths)
Diamonds: carats in diamonds is totally different.
The same word, but referring to weight, not purity. a diamond carat, is 0.2 grams in weight.
It comes from the weight of a seed, which were all the same size by the way they grew, so used on ancient balancing scales, as a standard measure, called the carob seed.

in the beginning, if there is no longer an indicator, possibility is it is not actual gold. The decrease the quantity on the ct count quantity, the better the metallic is. So an 18ct may well be softer, and easilly dented. A 10ct may well be better and much less possibly to dent. maximum mens rings are made with 10ct gold, and maximum womens are everywhere inbetween.
