Intelligent question. It is temporary, and because it is temporary, it is illusion to think that we can be happy here. This is a place of misery for the most part. People confuse happiness with the temporary pause in misery.
We are individual spirit soul. That is our actual identity, not the temporary body that we inhabit. We are here because we did not want to serve in our spiritual body. We wanted to be served, be the lord of everything. So, God, being merciful, gave us a body and the means to rule, but within the limits of material existence. Evenutally, we realize that our supremacy here on earth is an illusion only, and that we are confined to these bodies that are subject to old age, disease, and death. Once we realize this, we turn once again to the service of God, and upon giving up this body, we can attain our original spiritual position again, as servant of God.
This place is both the reward of our desire, and the prison of our disatisfaction. God gives us what we want, but we can never be happy just getting what we want. For us to truly be happy, we must serve God.

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.
I've come to two conclusions recently:
1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.
First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.
Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.
So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.
To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

How many deep questions tonight on this section ah?.
I don't know at all what to say, maybe, i will say "crazy" things that ... would not make sense but,
I read this once:
"Everything is one thing. The same thing. The hand that wrote my story, wrote yours, and the rest".
Maybe we should ask "that hand", the meaning of this "temporary life".
Your question made me "think" in somenthing "grotesque", I apoligize in advance for it:
Have you ever wondered, why do we eat, if some few hours later, we go to the bathroom and say "good bye" to part of the food we already eat?, HaHa.
Or,
Why do we make our beds in the morning, if at night, when we go to sleep, it becomes a mess again?.
Sorry, really sorry, for these ugly simils, but ...
maybe all this is just a process ... a necesary process ...

It does not matter if this life is real or imaginary, temporary or permanent, with or without meaning. You will still feel pain, and will still have happiness or suffer. So you either decide to make the most of the situation or be miserable. Your choice.
Someone asks this question at least once a week.

I fear if you live your life as if it were "fake", then you would have a very sad life.........why do you think we are pretending? Can't we be happy because we embrace life and chose to live it productively? The only thing I am convinced of, is that I must chose my Own path and live with the consequences.

There is no meaning. It's not fake, it just is. Life is temporary. Dogs, lions, cats, insect, monkeys, and humans all have a certain life span and then they die. That's it. We are simply recycling the free energy at the surface of the earth.

Dear Tiffany, This world we live in was not given to us to give us pleasure but was created by God for His pleasure and until the fall of man(the first sin by Adam and Eve) that is exactly what He had. We are created to bring God glory with our lives that we live so that when Christ returns to this earth(known as the second coming of Christ) we and those we shared the gospel of truth with here on earth will be together in eternity with God the Father,God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. This life is only temporary here on earth, this is where God prepares us to be prepared and to help others to become prepared for Christs second coming.Want to know more? just ask. Bye

We are born into this imperfect world, so that we may see God. If the world were perfect, we would not be able to see God; we would have no use for him. There would be no suffering and no sin (Basicly the point of the Adam and Eve story). The point of life is to realize the importance of being humble and kind and having character even when you are down (Basicly the story of Job). OR similarly: Jesus said (not verbadum) that if someone strikes your cheek, turn your head and let them strike the other one. It's not about the size of your bank account or the size of your ego; it's about giving and being kind to people even when they mistreat you. Everyone should strive to emulate Christ and become like him. My brother once said that we (human beings) are the closest entities (similar) to Jesus. SO: We should act like him.

There is no such a things as "temporary Life" Life is eternal and what we are , in this case, is a eternal continuation of Life...Any form of Life should be equally honored...for we are Life itself experienced being in form....and Life is a Meaning within itself...
