They are fairly big, and healthy. They are currently in our basement which is very cold, their water is not frozen, and they are still eating. Are they going to be okay through the winter? I mean they have a basking light which gives some heat, I am going to put in a water heater tomorrow night, I just need to know they are okay. They are penninsula water cooters.

if you put a heater in there and have a heat light on, they will be fine. i have been keeping my tropical fish in my basement through the winter for the last 3 years. They were fine. Just make sure the temperature of the water is between 75-82 degrees. Hope this helps!

This species comes from Florida, which would mean it does not hibernate, but can handle an occasional cold snap if given some support.

I would not count on them being 'OK' for long though- respiratory infections, pneumonia, etc. are probably already setting in.

The cooters as a rule don't do well in cold weather, and like temps even a bit warmer than sliders. Try this care sheet for basic ideas: http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Care/cs-flredbelly.htm

Well keep a thormonitor in the tank if it is below sixty you need to heat the water, this is an estamate, it really depands on what type of turtle it is.

they need to be very very warm, so the answer is no they probaly wont be ok. turtles catch colds very easily (i kno that sounds weird, but its true!) they can even catch a type of neumonia( how ever you spell it!) they need to get out of the basement 4 the winte!
good luck!
