I've seen this everywhere... "I'm a ninja!" "I'm a pirate!" "I'm an idiot!" Now they've added robots and vikings and hermaphrodites. Is this just something college kids are into?

Okay, yes, I don't care about ninjas OR pirates. I just want to know how this started. Some Vincent Vaughn movie, lame Dane Cook routine, geek website, etc etc.

Ninjas probably started in the 70s, along with the general kung-fu trend from China. Books, movies, comic books...not sure, but I'd say it was in the 70s.

Pirates started...probably back with Rob't Louis Stevenson, Treasure Island. Back then. I don't remember when that was written. They've always been somewhat popular, as are highwaymen, Robin Hood and his Merry Men, Wild West outlaws...all those "bad guys" who you loved anyway.

Vampire stuff really got into swing, I'd say, with Bram Stoker's Dracula, with the incomparable Gary Oldman as an extremely sexy, scary Dracula. What a fantastic movie! I remember leaving there (I was, I think, 14 when it came out) thinking...whoa. I need my neck bit NOW!!!!

I'd say that Dracula and Anne Rice really started the latest vampire craze.

Kids like role-playing, dress-up, stuff like that. It's natural to want to be somebody else.

Just don't go too far with the ruffly shirts and white makeup.

I don't know and don't much care. I do however, recall Mancow Muller a radio personality out of Chicago used to call some callers Ninja.
