The United States Library of Congress (LOC) has over a thousand images related to the Civil War available on-line. It is the single best reliable resource. I've included a link which is a good starting site to access these photos. Since you're interested in the secession, you might want to try 1861 in the timeline section for early photos.

Most of the images on wikimediacommons do not have copyrights that might limit you in what you're trying to do. Here are some pages you should look at:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:American_Civil_War_people
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/American_Civil_War

Also consider simply doing an image search at www.images.google.com .
