Gotta go with 2001: A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner. There are college courses dedicated to unraveling all the symbolism in 2001. That should be a good testament to the film.

OMG! Not Blade Runner, it was soooo boring. I have tried to watch that movie many times and can NEVER get thru it! Don't forget the Star Trek movies folks........there are some great movies in both the original and the next gen franchises. The Matrix series is pretty good too, a lot of special effect were developed for those movies.

Matrix - the reason is that it was a ground-breaking and original movie that introduced new filming method (ie: bullet time) and made us all wonder as to the reality of what we consider to be our lives. I also like this movie because of the definition Agent Smith gave of the Human race: that it is a virus, spreading and consuming all resources before moving on. Although many didn't like that part or simply ignored it, it is frighteningly accurate. We, as a race, have yet to learn to live in harmony and balance with the world around us, instead we are like 'viruses' destroying everything around us without thinking about what it will mean for future generations.

That is why Matrix is best in my books... aside from Star Wars of course ;-)
