My theory is that the Bush administration never intended on resolving the invasion in the first place. The fact that the intelligence presented never substantiated the threat that Saddam was to have posed directly to the US. WMD's were never discovered. It did allow President Bush to get re-elected for a second term. Handled poorly is an understatement, but as I say I think it's been as effective as the administration has allowed it to be.

The mission, taking down Saddam's dictatorship, was accomplished. We have a new mission - Bring a democratic republic to Iraq. 4.5 unemployment rate, defense for unborn babies. There have been mistakes in this war, as there were in every war. But overall, Dubya has done a decent job.

The war against Iraq went very quickly and very well, with about 70% of Iraqi forces surrendering immediately thanks to psychological operations and the rest being defeated by overwhelming force. The war to remove Saddam and the creation of the new, elected government has been achieved. Now we are defending Iraq from the Islamists who are attacking all over the world.
We are obligated by Geneva Convention to provide this defense until Iraq can handle the job on its own.
