How much you'd gt back depends on how much you earned and how much in taxes was withheld. If you didn't have federal or state income withheld, if your gross wages was low enough don't bother filing. If you did have income tax withheld, file and get your refund. You have dependents, and it's possible you could qualify for the Earned Income Credit, which could conceivably get you more of a refund than what you paid in. Check out the 1040-A and instructions. It's not that difficult and doesn't take long. You can't use the EZ form since you have dependents. Good luck :)

Whether or not you MUST file would depend upon how much you made. Not many wait staff make $8,450 in one month; unless you did, you don't HAVE to file.

But, you said that you have small children. You're probably eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit. You'll have to file to get that. It might not be a lot of money, but it could be a few hundred depending upon how much you made. Every little bit helps, right?

One more thing, though. You didn't mention your marital status. If you're married and are filing a joint return, you MUST claim that income on your return.

If you made over $8450 and are single, or had tips that were not reported to your employer so they aren't on your W-2, then you are required to file. Limits are different than $8450 for other filing statuses.

If you have a spouse and are filing a joint return, then yes, you need to include this income.

Otherwise, you probably aren't required to file, but probably should anyway since you are probably eligible for an earned income credit. Also, if anything was withheld for federal income taxes, you'd have to file to get it refunded to you.

Absolutely, depending on how much you made or how little. Working only a month should entitle you to a return of some or all of your fed taxes. You may be below the level in which they can tax you.

You should file tax return for your own good as you most probably will be eligible for Earned income credit and you will get back all taxes withheld in w2.

Again I would suggest you approach a VITA center, so that they will prepare and e-file your taxes free. It is an IRS organization and so you need not worry.

You won't get very much back, and if you have to pay someone to fill them out, it will probably cost you more than what you'll receive. Even getting earned income credit with your children won't get you very much. You get more as you earn more. If you know how to make out your own taxes, go for it, or if you know someone who will do it for you for free. Most welfare offices will do them for you for free. You'll at least get back everything you paid into state and federal.
