this man was the biggest entertainer, singer, from the 1920 1930 1940 1950 I like some of the present singers, but they fall short of vocal voice singing, [its all background music that matters]

He's okay - though by the end of his career he had pushed the limit of singing blacked up to it's limits. No I don't think he was racist. He was a great self publicist keen to try out new ways of promoting his music.

I like 'A Quarter to Nine' - not sure I've got the title right. I love the fact that for the UK market the word 'bum' was re-dubbed 'tramp' in one of the songs in the film Wonderbar as 'bum' was considered too rude for us Brits.

At the time his wife (Ruby Keeler) was apparently more famous as a singer than he was. Now there is someone you don't hear anything about. Why is that? Sexism maybe, I don't know? Now there is a question.

Al Jolson was one of my Dad's favourite singers so I grew up listening to him a lot, I like him too so much I bought a CD. Fortunately, I can sing the songs as much as I like at work because I look after 70-100 year olds and they appreicate my renditions.

See the thing about him is i grew up thinking of him as a great entertainer and that view hasn't changed but it was pointed out to me that he was considered a really huge racist over in america. But yeah i grew up with my parents playing his music.

I think he was one of those entertainers that you either liked or didn't. Personally I found some of his music a little irritating. However, at least I DO know who he is!
