1 times 5 equals 5
5 times 5 equals 25
10 times 5 equals 50
so if you don't have a calculator and are a flat null in math, you can use this process...
87 - 50 = 37 and 10 fives
37 - 25 = 12 and 5 fives (total of 15 fives)
12 - 5 = 7 and 1 five (total now at 16 fives)
7 - 5 = 2 and another five (new total at 17 fives)
leaving you with 2 out of 5 (to make it into a decimal make the dominator 10, so you multiply both top and bottom by 2, so you end up with 4/10 or 0.4. Add this to your 'fives' and you have your answer...

87 / 5 = 17.4
17 + 17 + 17 + 17 + 17 = 85 + the remainder
17 * 5 = 85 + the remainder.
Ask your math teacher to explain to you how to solve multiplication by using the axiom of addition. I used to do this when I was at grade 2 (elementary school)
