Hitler and his propagandists invented a fat passel of lies - including one that stated the German speaking people of the Sudetenland were in danger from the native Poles - and so Nazi Germany invaded Poland, which fell in a matter of days. Weapons of mass destruction were never found and the invasion had nothing to do with Poland's natural resources.

Germany invaded Poland in early September 1939. France and England had promised Poland that if Poland were attacked, they would go to war. They declared war on Germany.

In 1914, Poland no longer existed as a country, as its territories were divided between Russia and Germany. Following the First World War, a new state of Poland was created, one which divided one of the founding states of Germany, Prussia, in two with the Danzig Corridor (a factor which really helped rally German sentiment against Poland).

It was this pre-WW I state of affairs that led to the repartitioning of Poland between Nazi Germany and the USSR in 1939 as well after the signing of the Nazi-Soviet Nonaggression Pact.

Poland, most likely, never wanted to get involved. It wasn't their fault that Germany invaded them, which started the war.

Two elderly Poles were walking along one day in 1943. One said to the other, "You know Karol, I'm depressed. Our country has existed for only about 30 years, and we've already been invaded by the Germans. That's just terrible." "Cheer up (Polish name 2), at least we're better than the French." "How so?" "Well, France has existed for almost thousands of years. It took them alot longer to lose to Germany than us. At least we know when we're beat." "This is true, we are better than the French." What, you want a punchline? There's not really a joke here, the French suck.

Negotiations over Danzig "failed." Hitler really had his sights on regaining the territory lost as a result of WWI Treaty of Versailles.....so he invaded Poland in September of '39 and took it!
