When you root for a team that coming into 2007 had no hope, and no winning season since Barry Bonds was simply a jerk, back in 1992 (as opposed to being an alleged steroid user, alleged perjurer, and jerk), getting a player like Adam LaRoche is a big deal. Even if he doesn't hit as many home runs this season as he did last year (remember, he was in a line up fortified with the bats of Chipper Jones, Andruw Jones, Brian McCann, and Jeff Francouer), he is a solid defensive first baseman, something the Pirates haven't had since Jeff King.

No, not this year. They have a few good young starting pitchers, but in the rest of the rotation and in the bullpen, they are a mess. They just traded away their closer, and I don't think anyone is ready to step up and take his place. I think that that trade was bad for both teams. The Pirates gave away a great young closer for a first baseman and the Braves got a set-up man. The Braves now have no first or second baseman, so their defense is going to get hurt because they are gong to have two inexperienced players on the field. The offense is hurt because they lost LaRoche, who was a major staple in the offense. Overall though, I think that won Pittsburgh out.

LaRoche isn't the answer to all of the problems, but he will help the team to score more runs and hopefully win more games. Besides, if the starting rotation continues to improve like it did after the All-Star break last year, the Pirates might finally have a winning season after 14 consecutive losing seasons.

Because when your team has been this bad for this long, they need something to be hopeful about. Unfortunetly its not LaRoche, theyve already lost everything of value they received from the Kendall and Giles era minus Jason Bay, so i guess if i was a pirate fan id dig for things to get excited about too.

As a Braves fan for all my life, I think that they are getting something special, but they need pitching (which they gave up) to answer their problems. You may have heard that Adam has ADHD, but never took any medication for it until last year. Taking the medication he was a completely different, more focused player. He has the fielding to win a gold glove, and if you look at his second half stats last year, you can see why people will get excited over him and Jason Bay in the same lineup. He won't solve their problems, but he has a seamless swing that is enjoyable to watch.

Maybe this is the first time in many years that Pirates fans have been afforded the opportunity to exercise a bit of optimism for a change. Why rain on the parade and be a pessimist?

LaRoche will help them, but they won't be good until they fix their starting rotation.
